Written
“And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word of God.” – Luke 4:4, KJV
Our extended family is currently embroiled in a court battle with an incorrigible landgrabber.
If there is one thing that I have come to appreciate during this episode, it’s the power of the written word.
All of a sudden, simple agreements that were tucked away, written by hand decades ago, have become so precious.
Tell you what; it’s extremely difficult to argue against something that is ‘in black and white.’
No one knew this better than our Lord Jesus.
He reached for a formidable secret weapon – the written Word of God.
“It is written,” He declared, to the utter chagrin of the tempter.
Now, the Bible spans some 1,500 years of writing, painstakingly written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by some 40 authors, including kings, prophets, priests, fishermen, and professionals.
Beloved, God knew exactly what He was doing when He put His Word in writing.
When confronted by the tempter, Jesus simply quoted Scripture (Deuteronomy 8:3) – a text forged centuries before He wrapped Himself in flesh.
And with that one phrase, the enemy’s schemes crumbled.
This moment teaches us something vital: The Word of God is not merely a history book gathering dust on our shelves.
It is a present-tense survival manual, a living weapon, sharper than any double-edged sword.
Satan is not intimidated by your regular sacraments, church attendance or endless fasts.
What he trembles at is a believer who has hidden God’s Word deep in their heart, ready to speak it when the temptation comes.
Here’s the key: Jesus didn’t go along with a red-letter Bible to that dry wilderness.
He had no leather-bound study Bible, no apps on His phone or tablet – just Himself alone.
So, how did He quote Scripture so readily? He had internalized it in His heart.
If we want the victory of the Savior, we must wield the weapon of the Savior.
He had read it, studied it, meditated on it and assimilated it so deeply that when the moment of crisis arrived, the Word rose to the surface like breath itself.
Psalm 119:11 captures this beautifully: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Never try to fight a spiritual war with carnal weapons!
The one and only weapon of offence in God’s spiritual armory (Ephesians 6:10-18) is the Sword of the Spirit – “It is written.”
That’s what makes all the difference.
To live by every word from God means to internalize it so deeply that it becomes part of our spiritual DNA.
So how do we follow our Lord’s example?
Read it daily. You wouldn’t go a week without eating physical food. Don’t starve your spirit!
Memorize Scripture. When Jesus was in the wilderness, He had the Word in His heart, not in His pocket or under His pillow. Hide verses away like treasure.
Apply it immediately. Knowledge without obedience is just information.
True power comes when we act on what is written, and use it to stab the enemy where it hurts most.
Church, we cannot quote what we do not know!
We cannot stand on promises we have never read.
If we want the victory of the Savior, we must wield the weapon of the Savior.
It’s not enough to own a Bible; we must let the Bible own us.
We must read it until it rewires our thinking.
We must speak it until it silences the accuser.
So, the next time the tempter comes knocking, just open your mouth and unleash the Sword.
“It is written.” “It is settled.” “Every Word of God is enough.”
End of debate.
