Son
“And the devil said to Him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.’” – Luke 4:3
Just imagine a scenario where you land on a hidden document that claims you might not be your father’s child as you’ve always thought.
Even if you’re already a mature person with grandchildren of your own, your world would literally fall apart as you wrestle with numerous questions in your mind.
Fresh from the Jordan River’s waters where the Father’s voice thundered, “You are my beloved Son,” the tempter slithers in: “If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.”
Of course, the tempter doesn’t say, “You are not the Son of God.”
He whispers, “If you are…” This is temptation’s cunning blade; it strikes at identity itself.
The enemy injects the venom of doubt, tempting Jesus to show proof of the relationship.
Just imagine if Jesus had accepted the tempter’s challenge and the stone didn’t turn into bread. It would be a disaster.
In a world gripped by an identity crisis – where worth is measured by performance and approval by peers, we face this same assault.
The devil waits for our wilderness moments: the season of lack, the prolonged silence from heaven.
He picks up a stone – that financial struggle, that broken relationship, that unanswered prayer – and whispers: “If you were truly God’s beloved child, would you be in this situation? Why you?
“Don’t you think it’s likely that you’re actually not what you believe you’re?”
This strategy is as old as Eden, where the serpent asked, “Did God really say…?” – planting deadly seeds of doubt in Eve’s mind.
The enemy knows that if he can erode our identity, our faith, our purpose and our destiny would wither to a crisp.
He doesn’t need to overthrow us; he only needs us to question who we are in Christ.
But see the majesty of our Lord’s response.
Jesus doesn’t entertain the “if.” He doesn’t argue.
He anchors Himself in God’s eternal Word: “It is written…”
Jesus refuses to define Himself by what He can or can’t do.
In Him, you are secure, and nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate you from the Father’s love and acceptance.
His identity is not up for debate, nor does it have to be proven by anything.
It is a received reality. He would rather die of hunger as the true Son than be full as a ‘doubting Thomas.’
This is our example. When the enemy whispers lies, we must cling to Scripture without wavering.
Our identity is not contingent on circumstances, feelings, performance or possessions.
It rests on what Christ has done and what God has declared: ‘I will be to Him a Father and He will be to me a Son.’
This truth is your shield and your daily bread.
The ‘stone’ the enemy points at – that lack, that failing health – is not an indictment of your sonship or daughtership.
It is the arena where your identity shines in trusting dependence.
Beloved, do not let your wilderness define you.
Do not let the tempter’s “if” drown out you’re “I am’ and the Father’s “You are!”
When doubts assail, remember where God claims you: “You are mine, and you will always be, no matter what.”
Submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7).
Speak the Word aloud.
Rest in the finished work of Christ that made you a joint-heir with the Son!
Beloved child of God, your identity is not something you prove or debate about.
It is someone you belong to.
So, when the tempter comes to seize control, keep anchored in truth and watch as the ‘stones’ of your testing become monuments to the Father’s faithfulness.
In Him, you are secure, and nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate you from the Father’s love and acceptance.
