Flourish

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.”  – Psalm 92:12

A palm tree is an ‘evergreen’ – the scientific term for trees that never shed their leaves regardless of the season.

Indeed, the palm tree is well-known for its longevity, adaptability to different environments, resistance to pests and diseases and ability to thrive in extremely dry conditions.

In the arid Oriental regions where palm trees are rampant, these plants were often seen as symbols of growth, vitality, and renewal due to their ability to thrive in diverse environments and climates.

Their ability to withstand harsh conditions such as strong winds, hurricanes, floods and droughts symbolizes resilience and strength, thanks to their deep root systems and flexible trunks.

Additionally, many species of palm trees have long lifespans, with some living for hundreds of years. The date palm, for instance, can live up to 100 years or more.

Regardless of the environment, palm trees grow upwards into the sky, towering over every other plant – straight and upright (see Jeremiah 10:5).

That’s not all; palm trees are incredibly useful to humans.

Apart from their decorative/ornamental purposes, palm trees also provide food (dates and coconuts), materials for construction (wood, thatch), and various other products like palm oil and palm sugar.

Palm tree timber is valued for its straightness and resistance to pests and moisture. Palm leaves are also used for weaving and crafting different products.

In traditional medicine, various parts of palm trees, including the roots, are used for their medicinal properties.

Also, palm tree roots may be used to treat various ailments ranging from digestive issues to fevers, and also as construction materials.

These attributes made the palm tree a favourite for poets and other creative writers who used it for imagery and symbolism (see Song of Solomon 7:7).

3 John 1:2:

Additionally, palm tree motifs were intricately carved into the walls and doors of both the Tabernacle and the Temple in Jerusalem, symbolizing the beauty and prosperity that God promised to His people (see Exodus 26:32, 1 Kings 6:29).

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree,” declares King David in our meditation today.

The Amplified Version puts it this way: “The righteous will flourish like the date palm [long-lived, upright and useful].”

‘Flourish’ is a beautiful word, isn’t it? Its synonyms include succeed, bloom, burgeon, prosper, thrive, etc.

I believe Psalm 1:3 had the palm tree in mind: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.”

It’s unfortunate that in the contemporary Church, many people associate ‘flourishing’ with merely material possessions so much that when you say that ‘someone is flourishing,’ people tend to ask what model of car the person is driving.

From the biblical perspective, the concept of ‘flourishing’ encompasses far much more than mere physical possessions.

As a matter of fact, we’re all familiar with situations where seemingly wealthy people could not be described as ‘flourishing.’

Biblically speaking, flourishing is holistic – encompassing the spiritual, the mental and the physical.

It’s what the apostle John had in mind in 3 John 1:2: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”

In other words, as your spiritual life in Christ thrives and prospers, John prays that the saint’s outer life and physical health would also flourish.

In a nutshell, it’s God’s perfect will that we flourish – upright, evergreen, resilient and fruitful – like a palm tree, regardless of the environment and the season.
