Satisfied

“With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” – Psalm 91:16

Sometime back, one of my girls carefully removed the skin from the pieces of chicken on her plate and put it aside. Inquisitively, I asked her why she was doing that.

“I have decided to stop eating the skin of chicken,” she replied curtly. Her answer somehow shocked me as it took me back to the time when I was growing up in the jungles of Nakaseke in Luwero District.

Back then, chicken was a once-in-a-year delicacy – and nothing but a tiny piece of meat swimming in a plate full of diluted soup.

Today, we can eat any amount of chicken whenever we want it (of course some people would say it’s not healthy!); I mean today our kids can even afford to dump the skin of chicken in the garbage bag.

In our meditation today, the psalmist says “with long life I will satisfy him,” a promise of God’s blessing and provision for those who dwell in His presence and trust in His Providence.

When God says that “with long life I will satisfy him,” He means that those who trust in Him will certainly experience a full and satisfying life.

This doesn’t necessarily mean a life full of pomp and luxury, free from all troubles or hardships, but rather a life that has found its fulfilment in nothing but His divine presence and gracious providence.

It should be understood to mean living long enough to realise that in the final analysis, all the ‘kingdoms of the world and their glory’ are nothing but vanity!

True fulfilment – real satisfaction – in this world can only be found in living in the “secret place of the Most High” – in His Salvation (Christ) – in this life and beyond.
