Fortress
“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.” – Psalm 91:2
No prizes for guessing the world’s most fortified city.
Following its capture by King David from the Jebusites, Jerusalem (meaning ‘city of peace’) became the capital of Israel.
But even before its capture, the city was almost impregnable, so much that the only way King David and his forces could overrun it was via a water duct.
David later added even heavier fortifications, which made it a safe haven for the citizens during countless wars and sieges throughout history.
A ‘fortress’ is a heavily fortified and strategically important military complex designed to withstand attacks from enemy forces.
Fortresses were characterized by high and thick walls, high towers and layers of bulwarks, which provided a formidable barrier against invaders.
Additionally, a fortress had a central citadel or stronghold that served as the last line of defense for the safe custody of the king and his family members.
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and the One who rescues me; My God, my rock and strength in whom I trust and take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower—my stronghold.”
PSALM 18:2
By saying that “God is my fortress,” the psalmist is expressing his deep trust and reliance on God for protection, security, shelter and safety from the attacks of his numerous adversaries.
The Most High, the Almighty God, is our ultimate source of protection and security, regardless of what kind of threats and challenges we face in life.
Psalm 18:2 says; “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and the One who rescues me; My God, my rock and strength in whom I trust and take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower—my stronghold.”
Another says; “Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”
Psalm 59:16 adds; “But I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble (59:16).
In all these references, take note of the present tense (‘is’ and ‘are’) and the personal stance (‘my’).
This implies that faith/trust in God is a daily and personal thing.
No one, not even your pastor or ‘man of God,’ can do it for you, and yesterday’s faith might not be of much help today.
If you’re hidden in Christ as your fortress today, you’re completely safe and you have absolutely no reason to be afraid.
Amen!
