Caesar

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.” – Luke 2:1

Have you ever wondered why Jesus Christ was born precisely when He was? Why not a century earlier? Why not later?

The Bible says; “When the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son.”

Indeed, the birth of our Savior wasn’t just divinely timed, it was divinely orchestrated through the most unlikely instrument imaginable: a Roman emperor who never knew the God he served.

Augustus Caesar reigned from 27 BC to – 14 AD, and while he never met Jesus in person, he unknowingly spent his entire 40-year rule preparing the world for His coming.

When Augustus emerged victorious from Rome’s brutal civil wars, he established what historians call the Pax Romana (Roman Peace).

For the first time in centuries, the entire Mediterranean world rested under one authority.

No more constant warfare. No more regional chaos.

Augustus built cross-border roads, suppressed piracy on the high seas, standardized laws, and unified the empire under two common languages: Greek in the East, Latin in the West.

Of course, many Jews of the time looked at all this as an onslaught on their culture. Some even probably prayed against it!

But our sovereign Lord God was up to something.

God was building highways for the Gospel.

Those same roads Augustus constructed to move his armies and goods were the same roads that the Joseph and Mary would use to flee to Egypt.

They were the same roads that the apostles would later walk, carrying the Good News from Jerusalem to Europe and beyond.

Those sea lanes Augustus secured for trade became the voyage routes for Christian missionaries.

The peace Augustus enforced with Roman legions created the stability needed for a fragile new faith to take root and spread.

Augustus thought he was building an eternal empire of stone and law.

What he didn’t know was that his infrastructure was building a foundation for a Kingdom that truly would have no end.

Our meditation todays says; “In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.”

This decree inconvenienced the population but it wasn’t just administrative bureaucracy; this was fulfillment of prophecy in motion.

Because of that imperial decree, Joseph and Mary had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral home.

And what was so special about Bethlehem? That was exactly where the prophet Micah had declared the Messiah would be born, seven centuries earlier.

God used a Roman emperor’s tax policy to fulfill ancient prophecy. Now, let that sink in.

The Bible says; “the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord.”

In this season, remember this: Our God’s purposes and plans can be fulfilled through the decrees of kings and the most diabolical tyrants.

Throughout the generations, He has achieved His purposes through the grand sweep of history itself.

Nothing catches Him by surprise. Every political development in nations or across the globe, every historical moment, every geopolitical ‘coincidence’ is within His sovereign plan. Yes, it is!

So, whereas it is your right to fulfil your civic duties as a citizen, never allow what’s happening in the political realms to break your spirit or make you bitter.

The sovereign God who used a pagan emperor to prepare the world for His Son’s arrival, can certainly use whatever circumstances to accomplish His purposes in our world.

Trust His timing. Trust His methods – His modus operandi.

Trust that He’s already gone ahead of us, preparing the way.

Happy New Year!
