Hallowed
“…Our Father…hallowed be Your Name….” – Matthew 6:9
Since creation, having a name has remained a cornerstone of not just personal but also of cultural identity and law.
Throughout history, a name was far more than just a means of identification; it held profound cultural, religious, and social significance.
Indeed, a name is a powerful testament to our personality, identity, and authority among other attributes in the world.
Therefore, the world over, ‘tarnishing one’s name’ is one of the most serious civil offenses and one could be forced to pay a colossal sum of money in compensation.
This is because your name is sort of a personal brand, intrinsically linked to your reputation hence influencing your credibility, trustworthiness, and ability to attract clients, partners, or supporters.
Similarly, God’s Name signifies a revelation of His character and nature.
For example, YHWH (Yahweh/Jehovah), translated as ‘I AM WHO I AM’ is His personal, covenantal name – signifying His eternal, self-existent nature and His graciousness and faithfulness to His promises.
Our meditation today from the ‘Lord’s Prayer,’ shows the first petition that our Lord Jesus taught His disciples to make to their Father in heaven: “hallowed be Your Name.”
The Greek word translated ‘hallowed’ appears only here in the entire Bible, which signifies its importance.
The word means to ‘be treated as holy’ or to ‘be reverenced’ above and beyond any other thing or god.
It has its root from the Greek word ‘hagios,’ which means ‘holy/sacred’ or characterized by purity and moral integrity.
‘Hallowing’ involves specific actions and practices that demonstrate reverence and honor in the sense that He is like no other!
Causing God’s great Name to be profaned or tarnished is a serious sin against Him.
If we claim to hallow God’s Name, our thoughts, words and actions in daily life should align with that reverence.
In contrast, causing God’s Name to be hallowed in this fallen world is one of the most-pleasing things a person can do for God’s kingdom.
Ezekiel 36:23 (NKJV) makes this point abundantly clear: “And I will sanctify My great Name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD,” says the Lord GOD, “when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.”
Leviticus 22:32 warns: “You must not profane My holy Name. I must be acknowledged as holy among the Israelites. I am the LORD who sanctifies you.”
The Bible says, believers are called “By His Name.”
2 Chronicles 7:14 says: “If My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves…”
“Hallowed be Your Name” isn’t just about wishing that God’s Name would be hallowed; it also implies a commitment on the part of those called by His Name to live in a way that hallows God’s Name.
Isaiah 43:7 says; “Even every one that is called by My Name: for I have created him for My glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.”
That implies that our lives as believers in the world should reflect God’s character and bring honor to His Name.
If we claim to hallow God’s Name, our thoughts, words and actions in daily life should align with that reverence.
