Ruins
“Your servants love her, even though she is destroyed; they have pity on her, even though she is in ruins.” – Psalm 102:14, Good News Bible
Years ago, there was a popular hymn we used to sing.
It’s called ‘Broken Pieces,’ written by Ruby Kitchen & James Martin, Jr.
The chorus says;
“Pick up the broken pieces and bring them to the Lord;
Pick up the broken pieces, trust in His holy Word;
He will put them back together and make your life complete.
Just place the broken pieces at the Savior’s feet!”
People don’t like broken pieces, much less broken people and their dreams!
They like you when you’re blossoming but the moment they see your life in ruins, they simply shun you at best or write you off or sweep you away into complete oblivion at worst.
However, in our meditation today, the psalmist makes reference to the destroyed city of Jerusalem.
“Your servants love her, even though she is destroyed; they have pity on her, even though she is in ruins,” he says.
In the Bible, the concept of ‘ruins’ may speak of destruction and punishment due to disobedience.
However, God is also the God who delights in putting the pieces together to restore the ruins.
The prophet prayed in Jeremiah 17:14 (MSG): “God, pick up the pieces. Put me back together again. You are my praise!”
Aren’t you so thankful that we serve a loving God that can pick up the broken pieces of our lives and mend them?
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Ruined’ by someone you loved; ruined by an employer you had given all your life for years; ruined by a blunder that made your entire career splinter into pieces; ruined by poor health or different ailments, etc.
So, I don’t care what happened and who wrote you off as ‘ruined beyond repair.’
Just carry those struggles and shattered dreams and by faith and place them at the Master’s Feet!
I wish to declare that our God is a Master Mender who is capable of mending any broken heart, life or dream!
God did make this message poignantly clear to His people through His servant Isaiah, whose ministry took place during a tumultuous period in the history of ancient Israel.
Isaiah 44:26 says; “It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’ And of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built.’ And I will raise up her ruins again.”
Isiah 58:12; “Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; You will raise up the age-old foundations; And you will be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.”
Isaiah 61:4 says; “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.”
So, I don’t care what happened and who wrote you off as ‘ruined beyond repair.’
Just carry those struggles and shattered dreams and by faith and place them at the Master’s Feet!
The second stanza of our song says;
“You may feel that there’s no hope
Broken hearts just cannot mend;
Though you’re torn in many pieces,
Christ can make you whole again;
Storms of doubt blow all directions,
But don’t you be afraid.
God can make all corrections,
He made a body out of clay!”
There is going to be a rebuild, says the Father of Glory!
