“Your throne has been established since time immemorial; You are king from eternity.”Psalm 93:2

‘Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise,’ one of my most favorite hymns of all time, was written by Walter Chalmers Smith in 1867 (some 157 years ago, phew!).

He wrote the hymn after preaching a sermon on 1 Timothy 1:17: “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Verse two of the hymn says: “Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.”

One may almost suggest that the apostle Paul was paraphrasing our meditation verse today; “Your throne has been established since time immemorial; You are king from eternity.”

Another version says; “You have always ruled, and You are eternal,” while another says; “Your throne, O LORD, has been firm from the beginning, and you existed before time began.”

We all know that over the generations, there have been mighty empires and colossal kingdoms that existed on the face of the earth.

Take for instance, the formidable Pharaohs of Egypt, the Babylonian and the Assyrian Empires, the fearsome Greek conqueror Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the British Empire, etc.

Whereas those awe-inspiring emperors and dynasties looked almost impregnable in the prime of their power, they all came and went; indeed, most of them without even a trace today.

Their thrones were overturned, plundered and vanquished.

Yet, there is only one throne that has remained firm and unperturbable – God’s throne.

As a matter of fact, some of the great rulers of the world did ridicule our God and even threatened to make His Church an ‘extinct’ institution.

Well, there’s ample evidence that they never succeeded; instead, the Church only continued to grow from strength to strength throughout the generations.

God’s ‘throne’ is a symbol of His majesty, power, and authority over all creation; He has always reigned and will always reign supreme; His rule unchallenged and eternal.

Whereas the kingdoms of this world are prone to being overtaken by stronger powers, the rule of Christ was, is and will always be stable and enduring throughout eternity.

His throne is not subject to change or instability but remains firm and unwavering throughout eternity.

Whatever happens on this planet or in the entire universe or in your life, your Lord has the supreme authority over it and over all creation and His reign is eternal – it will never come to an end.

His throne of His reign is established, impregnable, invincible, unassailable!

‘Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise; He rules in might!
