Mightier
Mightier
“Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is mighty.” – Psalm 93:4, NIV
During a season in my life when the going was extremely tough, the gracious Holy Spirit introduced me to American Gospel artiste Jekalyn Carr’s hit song You’re Bigger.
Frankly, I don’t know how many times I’ve played the song since then.
First released in 2016, the song quickly gained popularity in the gospel music scene and became one of Carr’s most well-known and impactful songs.
Indeed, Carr wrote the song based on her own personal experiences and her faith in God’s ability to overcome obstacles and coming through for His people in difficult circumstances.
The song emphasizes God’s supremacy over every circumstance and declares that God is bigger and mightier than any problem, fear, or challenge that we may face.
Carr sings: “You’re bigger than the universe; You’re bigger than the sun and the stars; You’re bigger than the things that can tear me apart.”
Our meditation today comes from Psalm 93, one of the ‘Royal Psalms,’ which focus on the sovereignty and majesty of God, particularly in the context of His eternal reign and the stability that He brings to the universe.
The psalm begins by declaring that the Lord reigns eternally.
It emphasizes that God is clothed with majesty and strength, symbolizing His authority and power over all His creation.
The psalmist declares that God established the entire universe, maintains it in orderly fashion and that it cannot be moved without His permission.
However, having acknowledged the sovereignty of his God, the psalmist is faced with a dilemma: “The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves,” he pleads.
‘Waves’ and ‘floods’ may represent the trying times – challenges, difficulties, or overwhelming circumstances that threaten to engulf the believer or the community – the forces of chaos, unrest and disorder that may characterize a society.
Throughout its history, the people of God and indeed, Israel as a nation, did experience through those deeply troubling times.
In the realm of the spirit, the higher you lift your faith to the One who is mightier, the smaller tides and mountains become!
When these perilous times come, believers can be easily tempted into thinking that the LORD has lost control.
In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus warned of wars and rumours of wars as nations and kingdoms rise up against each other as well as famines, pandemics, and earthquakes in different places (see Matthew 24).
He admonished the Church “not to be troubled” over these calamities (verse 6).
“Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is mighty,” says the Word of God.
Matthew 14 has an interesting story of Jesus coming to His discipling walking on water and Peter asking Him to enable him walk on the lake too.
“‘Come,’ Jesus said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’
“Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’” (Verse 29-31).
I don’t know what is going on in your life, your family, your Church, your company or your country right now.
However big the situation, obstacle or peril might appear, rather than focusing on it, just lift up your eyes to the Lord who is mightier!
In the realm of the spirit, the higher you lift your faith to the One who is mightier, the smaller tides and mountains become!
As Carr sings, He’s bigger; He’s greater!
