“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.” – Psalm 91:2
Years ago, I used to be a very timid person. I mean my condition of social anxiety was so serious that my legs would literally tremble when speaking to even a small group of people.
Of course, it has taken God a lot of work and time to make me what I am today – vocal, outspoken, a little opinionated and candid.
David was not any different during his youth as a shepherd boy, so timid that he could not even make a case for himself when left to stay in the bush when his family was hosting the greatest prophet at the time and also when falsely accused by his older brothers.
However, in today’s meditation, the same David testifies that he confidently tell forth what he knew about his God.
“I will say this about my Lord,” he declares. The Hebrew word used here for ‘say’ means to ‘to tell using spoken words.’
For example, the phrase “thus says the Lord” appears more than 400 times in the Holy Bible, mostly in the major prophetic books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus used the phrase; “verily I say unto you” at least 75 times in the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Why would God insist on ‘saying’ over and over again? Evidently, behind the words ‘thus says the Lord’ and ‘verily I say unto you’ is awesome divine authority and power.
That’s what the saints are required to do – never get tired of ‘saying’ – telling it with the spoken word because behind our saying is power and authority.
David says he will say that the Lord is his refuge and fortress. What he meant here is that he would not shy away from saying what the Lord was to him; ‘He is my refuge and my fortress.’
‘What God is’ is all about what He does – His character and all His other divine attributes – omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and eternal.
And please mark the present tense and personal nature of this testimony – not ‘our’ but ‘my.’
“Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’ The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved…”
PSALM 96:10
Secondly, he says the Lord is ‘my God, which points to who the Lord was to him (my God) – the ultimate and highest being in existence, transcending all creation and above all gods and the idols that people worshipped.
Thirdly, it says that he would say what he himself was – ‘I will trust in Him’ – which points to the fact that he was a man who trusted in God.
Are you shy or ashamed of saying what the Lord is and who He is and that you trust in Him alone rather than the transient and temporary things of this world?
Psalm 96:10 says; “Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’ The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved…”
This was a clarion call for the people of God who were surrounded by powerful heathen nations to continually proclaim His glory and sovereignty over all the nations and all creation.
Whatever it is that you’re going through, never surrender the authority you have been given to declare God’s sovereignty over whatever ‘nation’ is around you.
Even if you’re surrounded by ‘nations’ such as diseases, perils, challenges, etc; say loudly among them what the Lord is, who He is to you, and what you’re as a child of God.
Come on now, don’t be denied; don’t be shy or timid!
