Hosanna

“And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, ‘Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is He that comes in the Name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” – Matthew 21:8-9

The week, marking the period in which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, buried and raised from the dead on the third day, is traditionally called the ‘Holy Week.’

It started with the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, saddled on an ass.

Our meditation today says the Lord was sandwiched by throngs of people who laid their garments on the road and were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the son of David, blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.”

These words were quoted from Psalm 118, which was traditionally recited at the Feast of Tabernacles. This poem is one of a group of psalms called the ‘Great Hallel’ (Psalms 113 – 118).

The term ‘Son of David’ is a reference to Jesus being the promised King who would take over the everlasting throne of David.

The phrase ‘He who comes in the Name of the Lord’ refers to Christ as the promised Messiah, who would deliver God’s people from all their oppressors.

Today, this event is celebrated as Psalm Sunday, when Christians worldwide make a public proclamation of Christ as their King and Redeemer by waving palm leaves.

The same way that the shouting of the multitude at the triumphal entry perturbed the elite class of the day, celebrating Christ publicly still antagonizes many people today. It’ ‘s okay.

Our word of focus today is ‘Hosanna,’ which means “save, we pray” in the Hebrew. Basically, ‘Hosanna’ is a prayer for salvation, a cry for help to the great King of Kings.

The Bible says Christ came to save sinners and whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.

Whatever the situation or the circumstances, this period is a solemn reminder to us all that we have a Great King who is ready and willing to save us when we call on His Name!

We are part of a kingdom and our King is Christ, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.  He is alive with us and He answers whenever we call on His Name. Amen!
