Mindful

“The LORD has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.” – Psalm 115:12

On Wednesday, I reached home at around 8.00pm only to notice that my pocket was empty. The wallet was missing!

In it was cash, ATM cards, original national ID card and driving permit.

Where had I lost it? I rarely lose stuff. Absolutely no clue. Apparently, I’d dropped it on my way home. I simply prayed about it and chilled.

The following day, I get a call from Stanbic Bank, one of the banks where I have an account.

“Someone called in telling us that he picked your ATM card so we’ve now blocked it,” the caller says. “We’ve asked him to take it to the branch nearest to him which is Kasangati.”

I rush to Kasangati Branch. They haven’t seen anyone or anything. Next to Kasangati Police. Nothing!

Should I get a Police reference and embark on the arduous process of getting new documents?

While at the Police, the officer asks me how I had known that someone had picked my wallet.

“First call Stanbic and ask them for the number of the guy that called them,” he suggests.

“Well, that toll-free line receives hundreds of calls daily,” I replied. “But I will try anyway as you suggest.”

Stanbic assures me that they would find the number.

Sure enough they do. Would it better to engage my source in security to be the one to call this guy he plays games with me if I’m the one to call?

“You’re a communicator; just call him yourself,” I tell myself.

The phone is on and he picks it.  I mention his name and thank him profusely for being so kind enough to pick my stuff and calling my bank.

He apologizes for not taking the wallet to Kasangati Branch as he had promised.

“But I have your wallet and all your stuff with me here. Look for me and I’ll give them back to you,” he says before hanging up.

On meeting him later at the fuel station where he worked, the young man hands me my wallet.

Everything is intact, though of course the cash (about Shs20,000) is missing. I don’t even bother to ask.

I simply give him a token of appreciation, a firm handshake and a pastor’s blessing.

Thanks go to my God for enabling me to get my stuff back in one piece. Such a thing rarely happens these days, you know.

In our meditation today, the psalmist sings that God had been mindful of His people. We serve a mindful God who is always thoughtful of us, even in regard to the little things like lost documents.

That is His nature; if he cares about the lilies in the bush and little sparrows as our Lord Jesus taught, what about you who worships Him and serves Him?

May He help us to trust Him in all situations at all times. Amen!
