Defence

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.” – Psalm 62:1-2

As a boy, I started out playing football in defence.

Even today as an avid football fan, I judge a good team by its defensive unit.

Indeed, the most successive clubs in the world build their trophy-winning teams around strong and tall no-nonsense defenders.

As a matter of fact, modern teams deploy a formation that comprises more defenders than strikers, which implies that a team is as strong as its defence.

At the political level, countries spend more on their ministry of defence than any other sector.

For example, the budget for the USA’s Department of Defence is estimated at $842 billion this year.

That is a colossal sum of money my friend, and more so if you compare it to Uganda’s total budget of a record $14 billion this year.

Even in Uganda, expenditure on the military has consistently surpassed what government spends on health and education.

The whole point here is that defence does matter a great deal.

PSALM 89:18

In our meditation today, David, a career soldier, celebrates God as his “defence” so he says he shall not be moved (shaken).

Recently, I was reading about America’s $13 billion USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest and most fortified aircraft carrier

The vessel’s state-of-the-art defences make it almost impregnable to attacks from land, sea or air.

Whatever may purport to attack the vessel, its 4,500 occupants can never be shaken.

“My soul silently waits for God who is my defence,” says the psalmist. Please take note of the present tense.

When God is your defence, you don’t have to make a lot of noise in self-defence.

He is more than able to defend you at all times, like He did to David from the time he was a boy until old age.

“For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our King.” (Psalm 89:18).

“My defence is of God, who saves the upright in heart.” (Psalm 7:10).

Because our defence is a priority, God says He is and will always be our strong Defender.

That means we can never be shaken or moved by anything that may come our way. Amen!
