Victorious

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” – 1 John 5:4, NIV.

On November 11, 1918, the Germans realized that their situation at the height of World War 1 was no longer tenable.

They therefore signed an agreement for a ceasefire to end the bloody war.

However, the German forces in German East Africa (current Tanzania) did not know about this development.

As a result, they continued fighting the British for several more weeks after the armistice had taken effect in Europe.

What a complete waste of lives and resources!

In our meditation today – and indeed throughout the New Testament – our spiritual victory is spoken of in terms of the past.

Every child of God – even the one who only got to knew Christ a week ago – is victorious over the world – the systems, schemes and structures that are against God – because of the new nature that they have attained.

The unstoppable faith that has triumphed over the world is faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

In 1 Cor.15:57, the Bible says God “gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” That implies that it is a gift from above.

In the original language, the word for ‘victory’ is ‘nike’ (of course you’re familiar with the sportswear brand that uses that name, right?)

Victorious Christianity is a determination not to accept defeat, whatever happens.

It means that any other alternative to victory is completely unacceptable.

According to John Maxwell’s 21 Laws of Leadership, the ‘Law of Victory’ states that leaders always find a way for the team to win.

That is what Jesus did for the Church; there could not be any Plan B!

As I mentioned earlier, one of the greatest truths in the Bible is that victory is a gift to the children of God.

You don’t fight for it or pray for it; you proclaim it!

PSALM 21:1, 5)

Psalm 20:6 says; “Now this I know: The LORD gives victory to his anointed.”

“The LORD gave David victory wherever he went”(1 Chronicles 18:5,12 NIV).

“He gives his king great victories” (Psalm 18:50).

“The king rejoices in your strength, LORD. How great is his joy in the victories You give! Through the victories You gave, his glory is great” (Psalm 21:1, 5).

Anyway, should I continue to belabour the point?

Another important truth is in Psalm 44:4: “You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.”

Your victories (mark the plural indicating the many types) are decreed or proclaimed by God!

He declares that You’re are victorious in battle and a conqueror of territory. Eh!

I like 1 Chronicles 11:14 a lot. It says; “But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.”

Like in any other battles, a victorious Christian life is all about taking a position, keeping it (defence) and attacking the enemy (offence) for a great victory.

Jesus did just that when He followed the enemy to earth, disarmed him and made a public display of the devil’s crushing defeat, thus guaranteeing our victory in every area of life (Colossians 2:15).

But even before that, Israel’s victories were always the Lord’s victories; they were not dependent upon their military power.

“The battle is the Lord’s,” was what David declared shortly before bringing Goliath down using a tiny stone and a sling.

Indeed, on many occasions after that, it was the Lord who always “brought about a great victory.”

Like the ‘Heroes of Faith’ in Hebrews 11, ours now is the fight to “keep the faith” not to defeat an ‘enemy’ – the devil, demons, ‘generational curses,’ or whatever they call it.

Let’s not be like the Germans who were ignorantly fighting an unnecessary battle!

Our victories were decreed two thousands years ago!

In a nutshell, Christ’s victory is our triumph; because He was victorious, we have been made or declared victorious too.

Prayer:

Almighty God, in every area of my life the battle was yours and the victory is mine! I am victorious because of the victory that Jesus Christ won for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

  1. Great post, and lots of important insights…however, what then is the role of the Christian? where do they go from here? borrowing from your text…;

Your victories (mark the plural indicating the many types) are decreed or proclaimed by God! …a victorious Christian life is all about taking a position, keeping it (defence) and attacking the enemy (offence) for a great victory….

…suggest that while we are guaranteed victory, there is some work to do. Which makes sense. One that is not at war cannot have victory…if he did, over what?

Where then is the middle ground? I think it lies in the nature of how we pray (or fight). A good lesson here is David and Soul. Observe their lives and you will see that one operated with the victory mindset and another defeat which led to his rejection.

    1. Yes indeed thanks for the feedback. How we pray is crucial. Spending hours ‘binding,’ casting out, resisting – basically fighting Satan and all sorts of demons – is wasted time that should have been spent in worship, adoration and supplication.
