Mysteries

“To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God” – Luke 8:10, NKJV

One of the favorite Bible verses for preachers is Deuteronomy 29:29, which says; “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever.”

Apparently, this verse comes in handy when we need a quick way of escape from a tight corner especially when asked a tricky question for which we don’t have an answer.

However, in our meditation today, Jesus affirms His disciples that to them it has been to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

In the original language, the word for ‘mystery’ is ‘musterion,’ which means ‘a secret thing.’

In the Scriptures, a mystery is a truth that God has been revealed at the right time.

In Bible times, the word was used in reference to the mysterious religions where adherents boasted of ‘secret knowledge’ – only revealed to those who had been initiated.

In that context, New Testament writers used the term to refer to the hidden truths or secrets about the promised kingdom in the dispensation of Christ.

In the Epistles, Paul used the word 21 times, which underlines the importance he attached to the concept.

To the Corinthians, the apostle wrote; “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God” (1 Corinthians 4:1).

In those days, a steward was the man responsible for administering all the affairs of his master’s household.

As stewards, believers manage the mysterious Gospel and all the other mysteries that God has entrusted to us to make the Kingdom of God operational and functional in both the spiritual and physical realms.

These mysteries can only be made known by divine revelation and can thus only be fathomed by those who are initiated by the Holy Spirit.

That’s why the Bible talks about “the mystery, which has been hidden” from all ages and generations since the creation of the world but has now been manifested to His saints through Christ and His Spirit (Col. 1:26).

Indeed, as our meditation verse shows, God desires that His children are not ignorant of His mysteries.

The word ‘know’ denotes deep intimacy.

This is absolutely important because it’s the revelation of the mysteries of God that establishes us in the Kingdom of God (Romans 16:25-26).

Without that revelation, we are not any different from any other human being.

The ability to fathom the mysteries of the Kingdom of God is what separates believers from other people.

The mysteries – the secrets – that are made known to us by God are what make us powerful and extremely dangerous to the kingdom of darkness.

The devil, which has no clue about the mysteries, has no fear for ordinary people; what it dreads are saints who have the divine revelation of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God because they know what it doesn’t.

We’re the people who shake the world and turn it upside down!

To us it has been given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom; may we not accept to settle for an ordinary existence!

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you for making me a steward of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. Help me to be a faithful steward so that the revelation of Your mysteries will establish Your kingdom in the world. For the glory of Your Name, Amen!
