Goodness
“How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have performed for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of mankind!” – Psalm 31:19, NASB.
Don Moen’s 2003 worship song, How Great Is Your Goodness, has been one of my favourite songs for many years.
The lyrics of that wonderful song were taken from Psalm 31, written by David at a time when he was in hiding in caves because his life was in danger.
Earlier, Prophet Samuel had anointed him king as a young man. But now, he was a vagabond dwelling in the wilderness far away from home and his loved ones.
Of course he had questions. Why would a man anointed to be a king live such a miserable life?
But instead of losing hope, David remained optimistic.
He composed this song to celebrate the “great goodness,” which he was sure the Lord had “stored up” for him along with those who fear Him.
He was pretty sure that however long it would take, the stored up goodness of God would surely be made manifest in his life eventually.
The Hebrew word for ‘goodness’means ‘loyal love.’
In the New Testament, this characteristic of God is described as His ‘grace’ (unmerited favour).
David lived his whole life celebrating God’s goodness for himself, long before it even manifested in his life.
He testified that the earth “is full of the goodness of the LORD” (Psalm 33:5).
Whether the enemy likes or not, there is “goodness stored” up for you and nothing and no one can or will be able to stop it from becoming a reality.
Although the world as we know it today is filled with evil and with people who have no time for God, those who acknowledge the Lord must look beyond the apparent confusion in the world to appreciate the rampant goodness of the Lord.
Referring to himself, David prayed; “You meet him with the blessings of goodness” (Psalm 21:3) and that “goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6).
In the end, David experienced so much of God’s goodness that it was evident even to other people (see 1 Kings 8:66).
What situation are you going through right now?
Whatever it is, there is goodness stored up for you, which shall manifest as healing, blessing, success, prosperity and increase.
Nothing and no one can stop it from becoming a reality.
It’s like a generous security, insurance or savings account that God is accumulating in your name as a beneficiary.
When it reaches ‘maturity,’ it will all become a reality.
The key message in this is that we should never lose hope however tough things might get.
Your situation definitely hasn’t reached David’s level whereby the most powerful army in the land was searching for him and a cash prize had been promised to whoever would bring him dead or alive.
Faced with those dire situations, David remained optimistic that things would get better and they certainly did as he was eventually crowned King of Israel, and as a result became the head of the lineage from which Christ, the King of Kings, would emerge.
Just continue walking in the fear of God. Whether the devil likes or not, there is “goodness stored” up for you and nothing and no one can or will be able to stop it.
Hallelujah!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the goodness in the plans you outlined for my life ahead of time. I won’t lose heart because at the right time the goodness you have stored up for me will be manifested for the glory of Your Name, Amen!
Amen Thank-you insightful
