Portion
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. “ – Psalm 73:26, NIV
Nothing makes people anxious more than trying to find out what was put in the will for them as an inheritance.
Nothing hurts a child more than discovering that their names don’t appear in their father’s will.
You simply can’t know what to think. Am I really my father’s child? You would wonder.
The Hebrew word for ‘portion’ means ‘the thing measured or allotted’ to someone as an inheritance.
Genesis 31:14 sheds some more light on this definition. It says; “And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?”
In essence, a portion or inheritance is a ‘possession’ to which someone has a legal claim.
In our meditation today, the psalmist makes a bold declaration that God is his portion forever.
By describing Him as his ‘portion,’ the psalmist celebrates God as the One who is sufficient for his every need.
The first part of this particular Psalm 73 is a despondent lamentation a fretful righteous man over the apparent affluence and prosperity of the wicked.
In verse 2, he says; “But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”
His mourning continued to verse 13, which says; “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.”
“I say to myself, ‘The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.’”
LAMENTATIONS 3:24
He was probably feeling what you would feel today, hearing that a certain MP has received a “reward” of UGX500 million at a time when your child has been sent away from school because there is a balance on her school fees!
However, the psalmist eventually came to his senses and made the declaration that his body and his heart might fail him, “but God is his portion forever!”
In another psalm, David said; “LORD, You alone are my portion and my cup; You make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance” (Psalm 16:5-6).
This expression, ‘The Lord is my portion’ is based on Numbers 18:20 where Aaron and the Levites were denied an inheritance in the land but was told instead that the Lord Himself was his portion and inheritance.
In Romans, the Bible says that we’re joint heirs with Christ!
The prophet Jeremiah said in Lamentations 3:24: “I say to myself, ‘The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.’”
That implies that it really doesn’t matter too much what the devil or other people say.
What matters is what you’re actively telling yourself right now. Released way back in 1998, Don Moen’s hit worship song, ‘God is the Strength of My Heart’ is one that I play and sing along almost on a daily basis.
If you can’t tell anything else to yourself, never cease saying to yourself’ “the Lord is my portion therefore I will wait for Him.” Hallelujah!
