Appointed

“For He performs what is appointed for me, and many such things are with Him.” – Job 23:14, NKJV

These days, the first question you’re asked when you show up at an important office to see the boss is if you have an appointment.

When you’re on appointment, you have a big advantage over the one who isn’t. Indeed, sometimes people even wonder whether you’re serious if you show up without booking an appointment.

In our meditation today, the suffering Job makes a great declaration: “He performs what is appointed for me!”

God is the God of appointments. He doesn’t just show up; He comes at the appointed time and performs what is appointed for you.

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time…though it lingers, wait for it for it will surely come.” (Habakkuk 2:3, NIV).

Throughout the Scriptures, we note how God ordered everything both on earth and in the cosmos at their appointed times.

First, there are seasons; epochs and periods appointed by divine counsel. Even the long-awaited manifestation of Christ could only be realized when the “fullness of time had come” (Galatians 4:4).

Everything that happened, everything that is happening today and everything that is going to happen in the future is by divine decree at a time duly appointed by God. He’s never too late nor too early!

In Genesis 18:14, God told Sarah: “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you.”

I don’t care what you’re going through or what your circumstances you’re dealing with right now. At the appointed time, God will show up; nothing will stop His intervention in your situation.

There is a limit on how much suffering and temptation we have to undergo – there’s a limit on how low we will have to sink. God’s divine ‘thermostat’ is all set to regulate it

Did you know that there are people that God has appointed in your journey at the appointed time?

Someone will simply show up from nowhere just at the right moment to fulfill his/her God-assigned appointment in your life, and might not be seen again thereafter.

Job 14:5 says; “Since his days are determined, the number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.”

What this shows is that there is a limit on how much suffering and temptation we have to undergo – there’s a limit on how low we will have to sink. God’s divine ‘thermostat’ is all set to regulate it.

Lastly, appointment is about putting the right people in the right offices. God does that as well, you know.

At the national, geopolitical and global levels, the Bible says; “The Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whoever He chooses.” (Daniel 5:21)

Paul wrote to the Romans (who were under a cruel emperor at the time) saying; “For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

No ruler or power takes the throne by accident or by coincidence; there’s always a divine purpose for every ruler’s ascension to power. God is in control of every nation’s politics!

At the personal level, our Lord Jesus told the disciples: “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go forth and bear fruit…” (John 15:16)

That means you were duly vetted then appointed by God for your specific mission. You’re the right person for it!

In a vision on the road to Damascus, Jesus told the murderous Saul (Paul): “I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.” (Acts 9:16)

Clearly, God does appoint persons to fulfill His mission; and more often than not, He may surprise us as the person He appoints may not tick all the ‘right’ boxes.

So, cheer up my friend; whatever comes into your life or around you and the timing are all by divine appointing. Just stay in tune with the Spirit.

Prayer:

Almighty God, the times and seasons are in Your hands. Help me never to doubt You but to know that you’re always in full control of Your universe. In the name of Jesus, Amen!

  1. Indeed He makes things happen in our lives in His own time. We should not worry but trust Him in everything that happens. Thanks Peter. I am encouraged.
