Safe

“The Name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe.” – Prov. 18:10.

A few years ago, I had a rare opportunity to enter an ancient tower in Turkey. It’s absolutely amazing.

In ancient times, towers were used as fortresses or hiding places in times of war.

Given that Turkey was always at war with other countries throughout the centuries, towers were built to be impregnable to invading armies.

A tower was basically a military installation intended to be the safest part of the city.

When missiles and bombs were invented, bomb-proof underground shelters or bunkers replaced high towers.

What does David mean when he refers to the name of Jesus as a “strong tower?”

Rather than living in perpetual fear or trusting in your own man-made schemes, just abide in Christ.  In His Name we are safe!

King David was a career soldier, so he knew the military importance of towers.

In Songs 4:4, we get an idea of how strong and invincible the Tower of David was: “built with rows of stones on which are hung a thousand shields, all the round shields of the mighty men.”

Fleeing into a tower would make one virtually inaccessible to the enemy as the facility was built with rows of stone and was protected by highly trained and heavily armed commandos.

We read in Judges 9:51: “But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women — all the people of the city — fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower.”

That shows that the Name of Jesus, which describes His character and attributes – has enough room for everyone who needs to be safe from the adversary.

In a world that is full of all sorts of dangers – deadly diseases, accidents, foes – physical and spiritual – God has made provision for your safety – the glorious Name of Jesus – to make you safe and secure from all alarms.

Rather than living in perpetual fear or trusting in your own man-made schemes, just take refuge in Christ.  In His Name we are safe!

Prayer:

Almighty God, the Name of the Lord Jesus is my strong and mighty tower; it’s a refuge for my soul. I will always run into it to be safe. Amen!
