Workmanship

“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].Ephesians 2:10, Amplified Version

On January 20, 1993, Maya Angelou recited a poem titled On the Pulse of Morning at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.

The poem was an absolute masterpiece; it not only became an international best seller but also won a Grammy Award.

As a hobby photographer, writer, poet and songwriter, I have a slight idea of what it takes to produce something that people would admire and treasure. It’s never a walk in the park!

Our meditation today says the Church is God’s “workmanship” – a work of art.

The Greek word translated as ‘workmanship’ is one from which we derived the English word ‘poem.’

The word connotes a handiwork or a masterpiece.

It really doesn’t matter what other people think about you, the truth is that God looks at you as His ‘poem’ – His own masterpiece

Isn’t it amazing that God describes His Church as His “poem”? We are His masterpiece!

And His intention for fashioning us was that we should walk in those things, which from the beginning of the world He prepared that we should walk in them (see Genesis 1:28).

By sending Christ to us, God’s plan for us to do good things and to live as He has always wanted us to live would become a reality, it would be our way of life.

As the psalmist sang in Psalm 100:3: “Know that the LORD He is God: it is He that has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”

Individually and corporately, you and I are God’s work of art, a masterpiece that He took time to make proper and fit for purpose.

It really doesn’t matter what other people think about you, the truth is that God looks at you as His ‘poem’ – His own masterpiece.

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you because I am wonderfully made, fit for Your purposes. Empower me to enable many people to be part of the Church and to acknowledge You as their Maker. For the glory of Your Name, Amen!
