Deep

“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.” – Luke 6:48 (NKJV)

A few years ago, I got an opportunity to visit Dubai and saw ‘live’ the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. I was blown away, literally.

When I returned to my hotel room, I did a little research on the magnificent building.

The story of its foundation was absolutely flabbergasting.

Did you know that the incredibly deep foundation is constantly electrified in order to ensure the structural integrity of the enormous building?

In our meditation today, we reflect on the words of our Lord Jesus to those who were hearing His message.

He likened those who hear the Word and put it into practice to the man “who dug deep” and laid the foundation of his house on a rock.

The key words are “dug deep” – way below the simplicity and superficiality of dealing with soft surface soil.

“To build high you dig deep” is the engineer’s motto.

How deep are the foundations of your faith, family, your ministry, your company?

How deep is what determines how high.

Are you tapping into the “blessings of the deep”? (Genesis 49:25)

It was interesting to discover that the Greek root for the word ‘deep’ is ‘bathos’ (from which we get our English word ‘bath’).

In ancient times, people used to clean themselves in rivers and lakes.

The adults would go to the deep end (bathos) of the river, away from the shallow end where the water was dirty and crowded.

Even today, the few swimmers at the deep end of the swimming pool do enjoy the cleanest water.

‘Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, see the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.’ If we’re intent on seeing the divine “works” and “wonders”in every area of our life, we’ve got to operate “in the deep.”

Psalm 107:23-24

The Bible says that it’s the “deep that sets us up on high” (Ezekiel 31:4).

In ancient times, people used to dig deep, sometimes for years, to build wells. Jacob’s Well, for example, is said to be over 75 feet deep.

These deep wells would be sources of life-giving water during the hot summer months when all the surface ponds and shallow wells would run dry.

Are you a deep well?

In Psalm 107:23-24, the Bible says; “Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, see the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.”

If we’re intent on seeing the divine “works” and “wonders” of God in every area of our life, we’ve got to operate “in the deep.”

We’ve got to keep away from the shores; it’s in the deep where real serious stuff happens.

In Ecclesiastes 7:24, Solomon wondered; “That which is far off and exceedingly deep, who can find it out?”

Well, the answer is in 1 Cor. 2:10: “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

Allow the Spirit to take you deeper.

Like in Thyatira, the people of the world are desperate to know the “depths of Satan” (see Rev. 2:24).

When devil worshipers decide to go into the occult and satanism, they don’t merely remain on the surface; they go really deep into it.

It therefore breaks the heart of God for Spirit-filled Christians to be content with operating in the shallowness and superficiality of mere religious posturing.

In these last days, God is calling His saints to go deeper.

That is what Ezekiel 47 teaches us. God leads Ezekiel deeper and deeper into the divine ‘river.’

Four times, the angel uses a measuring tape to mark off lengths of half a kilometer. Each time, the water progressively gets deeper from ankle depth, to knees, to waist, and finally too deep to cross except by swimming.

Don’t brag about your depth being up to the waist, go further where you must swim!

Like He told Peter in Luke 5:4, our Lord Jesus still orders us to “launch out into the deep.”

Out there, there’re “depths” of “riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God” yet to be fathomed (Rom 11:33).

Dare to launch out and dig deep for “deep calls unto deep”!

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you for drawing me closer to Yourself. Lord, help me go deeper in the knowledge of Your ways, Your Power, Your Love and Your will. For the glory of your Name, Amen
