Healed
“At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them.” – Luke 4:40
Picture the scene in Capernaum. It’s been a long, a really demanding day for Jesus.
As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, you would expect that it’s time for Him to be heading home for a well-deserved rest.
But instead, a crowd gathers — people carrying their sick loved ones. Paralysed bodies. Festering wounds.
Fevers due to viral infections. Afflictions that even the doctors had given up on.
And what does Jesus do?
Luke 4:40 tells us simply: “He laid His hands on every one of them, and healed them.”
Now, I want you to notice who is writing this. Luke was a physician.
A man trained to think in terms of symptoms, diagnoses, and prognoses.
Yet, here he is, recording a supernatural event that defied every medical explanation he had ever learned — and attributing it entirely to the authority of Jesus Christ.
When a doctor writes something like that, you lean in and pay close attention.
Indeed, Luke 4:40 is the bridge between Old Testament promise and New Testament reality.
All the way back in Exodus 15:26, God introduced Himself to His people with a name: Jehovah Rapha — the Lord who heals you.
This was not a side note. It was a core part of His identity.
God was not merely interested in Israel’s spiritual condition; He cared deeply about their nerves, their bones, their blood, and every breath they drew.
So, healing has always been the heart of God.
For that matter, Jesus was not introducing something new in Capernaum.
Jesus is not intimidated by your medical file; however thick it may be.
He was showing us the Father’s true nature.
But look at the method. He did not stand at a distance and shout commands.
Not at all; He laid His hands on each one of them.
He reached out and touched them.
He entered into their pain.
In a culture where sickness made people feel untouchable and unclean, Jesus moved toward them with a personal touch.
He validated their worth before He healed their bodies.
Sometimes I hear people say, “Well, healing is up to God’s will. His will might be for me to be sick.”
But let me ask you something.
Why then would God create all the thousands of medicinal plants and give our bodies a remarkable immune system to fight off disease-causing germs and bacteria, if sickness were His preferred will for His children?
Acts 10:38 tells us God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power, and He went about “doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.”
All; not some; not just the deserving ones.
It has always been God’s perfect will to make His people whole.
Now, I know what you are thinking — “That was then. What about now?”
Beloved, the ministry of healing did not retire when Jesus ascended.
Before He left, He commissioned His Church — that is us — to carry this same authority.
He told those who believe to lay hands on the sick, and they would recover.
The power of Jehovah Rapha now flows through the Body of Christ.
This is not a special gift reserved for a few celebrities in expensive suits on a stage.
It is the inheritance of every believer.
When the Church prays and lays hands in faith, it is Jesus touching the sick once more.
Perhaps you are lying there on your bed carrying a diagnosis that broke your heart.
Maybe some condition that has stolen your sleep and your joy.
You feel like the sun has set on your health.
But I am here to tell you — the Son of Righteousness is still rising with healing in His wings.
Your sickness is not your identity.
It is not your final destination.
Just as He healed them all in Capernaum, His power is sufficient for you today.
Bring your need to Him.
It’s not a mere ritualistic ‘sacrament’ for the terminally ill, as some have made it to appear.
The Bible says the prayer of faith shall heal the sick.
Jesus is not intimidated by your medical file; however thick it may be.
His touch is personal. His power is present. And He is still willing.
He healed then. He heals now.
Rise and be healed!
