Coming
“For He is coming to judge the earth. With righteousness He shall judge the world, And the peoples with equity.” – Psalm 98:9, NKJV
When did you last listen to a sermon about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ?
It’s most likely a long time ago because such sermons are not common in the pulpits of the contemporary church where most of the focus is on worldly success and prosperity.
Yet, the Second Coming of Christ was a significant and recurrent theme in the Early Church.
The anticipation of Christ’s return was deeply embedded in the Gospel that He handed over to His disciples.
Because the Christians of the Early Church faced severe persecution and hardship, the promise of Christ’s return provided much hope and encouragement.
That belief in a future divine intervention and the establishment of justice, equity and peace was a source of great comfort and strength for the disciples amid their struggles.
Consequently, those early Christians were driven by a sense of urgency to spread the message of Jesus as far and as quickly as possible and prepare themselves for His imminent return.
Generally, the apostles saw the Second Coming as a crucial part of God’s overall plan for salvation.
It was associated with the final judgment, the resurrection of the dead, and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
This eschatological vision provided a framework for understanding the present world and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan for the universe.
That is why the Second Coming of Christ was made a key component of the ‘Apostles Creed’ – the core statement of our Christian faith and doctrine.
Dear brother/sister; are you alert, awake and waiting for the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ or you’re too preoccupied with this world to care?
“He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead,” it says.
The apostle John, who had been with Jesus in the flesh and was eagerly waiting for His coming, wrote; “Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also who pierced Him: and all the peoples of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen” (Revelation 1:7).
While the contemporary Church is largely pre-occupied with the temporary things of this present world, the clarion call of our Lord Jesus is for the believers to “stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming…therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 26:43).
Hebrews 9:27–28 adds that; “Just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him.
The apostle Paul, writing to the Thessalonians said; “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God” (1 Thessalonians 4:16).
In our meditation today, the psalmist received this prophetic vision of the coming of the Lord thousands of years ahead of time when he says; “For He is coming to judge the earth.”
