Kept

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.” – Psalm 91:11, NKJV

Sometime back, neighbour asked me to keep their little son of about three years as they had an errand to run in town. Reluctantly, I accepted.

Barely an hour later, it dawned on me that ‘babysitting’ the really active infant was not going to be child’s play.

He was so active that simply getting your eyes off him for an instant could spell a mini disaster.

Whenever he stepped out of the house (and that was like every five minutes), I had to follow him to ensure he didn’t hurt himself.  I just couldn’t wait for the parents to return.

Guys, stay-home moms and babysitters surely deserve a good pay; it’s way too much work.

Our meditation today says; “God shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.”

I liked how another Bible version puts it; “He will put His angels in charge of you.”

The devil attempted to quote the above Scripture to our Lord Jesus during His temptation in the wilderness.

Matthew 4:6 quotes the devil saying; “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.'”

Now, if you look at it carefully, you will note that the devil left out the second part of the verse that says; “to keep you in all your ways.”

Of course, twisting the scripture was deliberate, because he realized that Jesus knew the truth.

From the time Jesus was in His mother’s womb, angels were put in charge of His life and they had kept Him in all His ways – when His parents went for the census in Bethlehem, when they fled with Him to Egypt from Herod, when He lived in Galilee, right up to adulthood.

However, the tempter wanted Jesus to forget that truth, so he deliberately left out that portion so he could tempt Him to doubt His Father’s Providence.

In the original language, the word translated ‘keep’ means “to tend, watch over or take care of.”

The word, which also forms the root for the noun ‘watchman,’ signifies doing it to fulfill a responsibility. It is in that sense that God is described as the “Keeper of Israel” (Psalm 121:4).

He says;He that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” – He never loses concentration when fulfilling his responsibility of watching over His people.

In the NT, the word used means “to keep by way of protection.”

In 1 Peter 1:5, the Bible describes us as people “who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

God keeps His people safe from external attacks and safe within the protective boundaries of His Kingdom.

The Bible says; “He is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.”

Shortly before he faced the executioner because of his faith in Christ, the apostle Paul declared; “I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him.”

Regardless of what you might be going through, you have an almighty and all-knowing Keeper in all your ways!  Never, ever doubt that. Amen!
