Known

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he has known My Name.” – Psalm 91:14

A few weeks ago, I attended the wedding of a young couple. In her testimony, the bride said that although their courtship lasted for three whole years, the groom never “knew her.”

Her statement was sort of a misnomer, a courtship lasting three years would ideally make the couple know every bit about each other. Of course, the adults understood what she was referring to.

Our meditation verse today carries the word ‘known’ – spoken by God to a believer who had set his love upon Him.

The Hebrew word translated ‘know’ means to be acquainted with, to be aware of, to discern or perceive.

However, the meaning can extend beyond mere intellectual knowledge to include a deeper sense of familiarity, intimacy, or even experience with a person.

In addition to the cognitive knowing, the verb also has a purely experiential side in that the “knower” has actual involvement with or in the person being known.

In Genesis 4:1 when the Bible says “Adam knew his wife,” it implies that he engaged into intimate contact with her — in a sexual relationship.

In the NT, ginosko is the Greek word used to convey the thought of this union, as between man and woman, (see Matthew 1:25; Luke 1:34). It conveys the idea of a deep, intimate knowledge or relationship at a personal level.

So, “to know” God is to have an intimate experiential knowledge of Him – basically to have a unique revelation of Him.

In the OT, God did not make Himself known to the people by His Name (Jehovah) not even to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob or Moses. His Name was not even supposed to be mentioned. He only revealed the Name to a select few – that He is ‘I am’ or ‘the God of the covenant.’

As our meditation shows, those who got a special revelation of His Name (not names, mark you!) were the ones who “were set on high.”

Every person who is spiritually intimate with God at a deep level has a Name that they have known of God. To some, He is Healer, Provider, Protector, Saviour, Peace, etc.

What Name of God have you known at the deepest level of intimacy?

Never, I repeat, never underestimate a woman who has set her love upon the heart of Jesus and has an experiential knowledge of God’s character.

Such a person can never be defeated nor discomfited; he/she will only keep on rising above every situation!

Like I usually tell people; the depth of your knowing will be directly proportional to the height of your rising in the realm of the Spirit. Amen!
