Quickened
“And you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” – Ephesians 2:1, KJV.
‘Walking Dead’ is a TV series that I’ve been following on one of the TV stations for a while.
It features a group of survivors who must remain vigilant in order to thwart attacks from an onslaught of zombies following the total collapse of modern civilization.
It is a good portrayal of our world today. There is ample evidence of the total collapse of modern civilization as hordes of ‘zombies’ take charge with their own set of morals and rules of engagement while real humans are looked at the ones who are ‘abnormal.’
For example, a lot of people are convinced that you’re ‘abnormal’ if you say that abortion is wrong and a man should not marry a fellow man. Incredible, isn’t it?
In our meditation today, the apostle Paul affirms the believers that they were once ‘zombies’ but have now been “quickened.”
In the King James Version of the Bible (my favourite), the word ‘quicken’ is used to mean to ‘make alive.’
Something that is ‘quick’ is alive. The Greek term means “to make alive or cause to live,” which of course is much more than mere physical existence.
Our Lord Jesus said: “For as the Father raises up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will” (John 5:21, KJV).
Verse 24 adds; “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My Word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”
This shows that those who have Christ as their savior were spiritually “quickened” (made alive) by the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation.
That verse points to the triple blessing of being ‘quickened’: you get everlasting life, you cannot come under divine judgment and you pass from the dead to the living.
“For since by man (Adam) came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:21-22
The Bible teaches that when Adam, the first man sinned against, all of humanity became dead because of sin and Jesus had to come to change the story.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 says; “For since by man (Adam) came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”
That’s what God does to those who obey Him, which means that those who have Christ in their heart are spiritually alive with Him in a world that is full of the ‘walking dead.’
And as the TV series I mentioned earlier illustrates, it is only normal that the few who were made alive may appear ‘abnormal’ to the ‘walking dead’ who are the majority.
In salvation, your soul is quickened; you’re made alive together with Him in His resurrection.
Prayer:
Almighty God, thank you for quickening me by Your Grace through faith in Christ. Help me to live a life that glorifies you as the living God in this evil world. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen!
