Hedged

“Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household and around all that he has on every side. You have blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land.” – Job 1:10, NKJV

If you’ve never lived in a house without a fence or perimeter wall, you don’t understand what people go through.

We once dwelt in one.

During the day, a herd of goats would be chilling on the verandah, polluting it with goat pupu.

During the night, stray dogs would have a party, fighting as they rummaged through the garbage.

Anything left outside would go missing. Groups of kids from the neighborhood would draw the curtains and watch the TV through the windows.

Having a fence/hedge around your home or garden does make a big difference when it comes to privacy and security of persons and property.

That’s why security-conscious people spend lots of money to erect strong gates and perimeter walls/fences for their land, homes and office premises.

In our meditation today, God and the adversary (Satan) are involved in an argument about a God-fearing man called Job.

This was a man whom God was so proud of – he was “was perfect and upright, one that feared God; there was no man like him in all the earth.”

However, Satan countered God’s testimony of Job by arguing that the reason Job was a good and successful man was because God had made a hedge around him, his family and property.

We, the children of God, are not vulnerable or exposed; we exist, live, work and move within God’s impenetrable and impermeable protective enclosure. Yes we do!

Of course, Job had no clue that he was the subject of a heated discussion that was going on in another realm.

Now, have you ever wondered or been concerned about what God or Satan could be saying about you in your absence?

Anyway, in Old Testament times, a hedge was a strong structure made from thorny shrubs that was set up around a garden of vines, to protect the valuable fruits from animals and thieves (see Psalm 80:12; Isaiah 5:5).

That was the picture that the devil had in regard to Job’s life – an impermeable spiritual hedge that he could not break through to attack the devout man.

You might not be seeing it with your physical eyes but there is a divine hedge around you.

Your life, family and property are safe and secure because they are within a divine perimeter wall.

We, the children of God, are not vulnerable or exposed; we exist, live, work and move within God’s impenetrable and impermeable protective enclosure. Yes we do!

In Ezekiel 22:30, God told the prophet that people of his generation were vulnerable to attacks because were not hedged in so He was looking for someone who could build the hedge and stand in the gap but found no one.

In the New Testament, Christ Jesus did pay the price for the spiritual hedge around those who believe in Him.

You’re safe and successful when you are in Him!

We are within a hedge where the devil can do us no harm. Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you because my life, my loved ones and property are gated and guarded by Your love.  I will not live in fear and anxiety for in Christ you’ve put a divine hedge around me. Amen!

  1. Thank you bro Peter for this great message. I always look forward to reading and meditation on what you write.
However with regard to this message, how do we reconcile this with the words of Jesus on suffering and persecution in the world that we shall face for His names sake?

    1. Thank you bro John!
Well, have you noted that in Job 2:6, God gave Satan permission to torment Job inside the hedge, but ordered him not touch his life?
That implies that the only suffering that we go through is what God has permitted.
Our pain in suffering is only limited to that which God knows we can bear (1 Cor. 10:13).
