Greater

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods…” – Exodus 18:11, NIV

One of man’s most powerful desires is to be greater than everyone else.

I mean there are people who could do anything, including selling their own souls, in order to be greater than every other person.

In the biblical context, ‘greater’ denotes being ‘over and above’ everyone or everything else.

Since creation, many deities, kingdoms, rulers, etc., have been trying to outdo each other in order to be known as supreme or greater than the rest.

In our meditation today, we reflect on the testimony of Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, and his former boss.

He had heard of everything that God had done to elevate Moses to prophetic status and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt with His mighty Hand.

On hearing all the amazing testimonies, Jethro confessed; “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods.”

These words imply that Jethro had hitherto regarded Jehovah God as one among the many gods or perhaps as the principal among them.

Finally, he declares full faith in God as the supreme Deity; the One who is over and above all the others.

I really loved the words, “now I know.”

I sincerely hope and pray that every person on earth would eventually come to a moment in their lifetime when they’ll reach the conclusion that God is greater than all powers, authorities, dominions and thrones.

He is greater than them all! Praise His Holy Name!

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

1 JOHN 4:4

King David did come to that moment. In Psalm 135:5, he sang; “For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.”

It was also what his son, Solomon, the wisest and richest man who ever lived, came to know.

In 2 Chronicles 2:5, Solomon confessed; “And the temple which I build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods.”

So, I don’t care who your god or gods are; my God is greater! And we shall do great things for Him because He is greater than all other gods.

Of course there is no greater Lord than our God and there is no greater position for man than to be aligned with His perfect will and purposes in this world.

Jesus told the people; “My Father, who has given [my sheep] to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s Hand.” (John 10:29)

Much later after years of experiencing Christ’s miracles and power, the apostle John also declared: “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4, NIV)

I don’t know what is going on in your life or the situations that you’re dealing with right now.

I don’t even care which gods or powers are arraigned against you.

Your God, the One who is on the inside of you, is greater than all; by far greater than the devil that is in the world!

Nothing can defeat us because He who is greater – the one who is ‘over and above’ – has also placed us in a position that is ‘over and above’ everything else. Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Almighty God, help me never to have any doubt that You are great, and that You’re above all gods. I will never have anything to fear because You’re greater than all. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
