Ways

“He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel.” – Psalm 103: 7

“Thus says the LORD: ‘stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.’” – Jeremiah 6:16

If I were asked to make a choice between knowing God’s ways and being shown His miracles, I would most probably choose the miracles part.

Of course I am not alone; we all love to see God “moving on foot” in our life or church services, don’t we?

The Scripture says Moses got to know God’s ways, while the children of Israel saw the miracles. They grieved Him continually.

But Moses wrote the first five of the books in the Old Testament, including Genesis, and also appeared with Jesus Christ on the mountain of transfiguration.

David prayed in Psalm 25:4; “Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.”

Do you have the same hunger for knowing God’s ways? Or you’re more inclined to receive His miracles, signs and wonders?

In the Bible, a ‘way’ refers to a path or route that has been marked-out. It is a manner of conduct or doing things that controls one’s life-style.

Psalm 145:17 says the Lord is perfect in all His ways, and righteous in all that He does. He desires to reveal His will and His ways to us and then expects us to walk in them and keep them.

God has revealed will and ways in the Gospel. His aim is that we must bear much fruit, which is a life in Christ that produces the “fruit of the Spirit” – the character and walking in ways that are in conformity to Christ.

Our God therefore demands that we must acknowledge Him in all our ways.

There are four categories of ‘ways’: the ways of God, the ways of the devil, the ways of the world and our personal ways – the so-called ‘rights,’ ‘freedoms’ –  the ‘what makes me happy’ syndrome.

In our meditation verse today, God challenges His people to “stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it.”

That “good way” is the ‘narrow way’ that Jesus talked about in Matthew 7:13, saying there are few who find it.

As someone has suggested, religion presents a sort of Christianity that has become conformed to the systems, principles and ways of the world, and of course the world has favored this debased ‘Christianity.’

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and tolove Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Deuteronomy 10:12, NKJV

“Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.” (Deuteronomy 8:6)

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 10:12)

The key word in all these scriptures is ‘walk.’

God expects us to have hearts that take delight in His ways. “Blessed are those who keep my ways,” He says.

“Amend your ways and your doings, and walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you,” Jeremiah told the people who were under captivity.

Today, there is an open challenge for us to search out and examine our ways; God is inviting us to be a people dedicated to His ways.

That’s why Christ came to give us the Gospel and the Holy Spirit to show us and teach us His everlasting ways and to help us walk in them daily.

Like Moses and David did, let’s delight in God’s ways, and then His works and miracles shall follow us wherever we go.

Prayer:

Almighty God, please show me Your ways and teach me Your paths. Help me walk in them daily so that I can find rest for my soul. For the glory of Your Name Amen!
