Anchored

This hope [this confident assurance] we have as an anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whatever pressure bears upon it]—a safe and steadfast hope that enters within the veil [of the heavenly temple, that most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells].” – Hebrews 6:19, AMP

A few years ago, our company organized a boat cruise for staff.

We sailed off from Port Bell in Luzira late in the evening.  We had a great time of relation on the beach.

Later in the night when we were set to board to return to Port Bell, the operators realized that the large boat had drifted several metres from the lake shore.

That meant that we could not board without stepping into the water. Ho! Apparently, the boat had not been anchored properly, which caused it to drift.

Drifting due to windy weather or waves is a major concern for sailors. To remain in one place or when offloading or loading the ship, it has to be stable and firm in one place.

In order to achieve this stability, large ships and boats carry an anchor – a heavy metallic device attached onto a rope or chain – that sinks into the sea bed to hold the ship in place.

Without an anchor, a boat or ship would simply get blown away by the wind or would float away.

Literary, being “anchored” means that there is something reliable, trustworthy and secure that is holding something firmly in place to prevent it from drifting or being blown away.

Figuratively, someone’s anchor is a person who gives unwavering emotional, physical or psychological support to that person whenever it is needed.  Of course we all need that person in our lives, don’t we?

Without that strong and firm Anchor of hope that held you in place, the storms and waves you have faced over the years would long have caused you to drift away from the faith

Our meditation today makes reference to the “anchor for the soul” – something that enables our souls to remain stable, steady and unwavering amidst the winds, storms and waves of life.

Without that strong and firm anchor of hope that held you in place, the storms and waves you have faced over the years would long have long caused you to drift away from the faith.

But you held on firmly and steadily because there was that ‘Anchor’ that has been securing your soul to the Rock of Ages.

It is worth noting that an anchor is not something that is external; the sailors must move with it on board and then have it deployed whenever the need arises.

Indeed, Christ, our powerful Anchor, promised to be with us ALWAYS (Matthew 28:20); never to leave us nor forsake us. With him on board, we don’t have to be afraid of the storms of life; we remain anchored.

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you because You are the Hope of Glory, the Anchor, that has always held my soul firm, safe and secure. Help me to know that no tide or storm of life can ever make me drift away from Your side. In the Name of Jesus, Amen!
